Bethan Jones

Every day is a new, exciting challenge 

Bethan Jones, from Pontypridd, graduated from the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering. She now works as a section engineer at Raymond Brown Construction, where she is based in Bridgend but works all over the UK. 

"As a site manager, I run the day-to-day activities on site, including Health and Safety, planning and programming of the works. 

The best thing about my job is that no two days are the same. I get to work with a variety of people on many different projects.  

Recently, I have worked on a flood defence scheme, a bridge refurbishment scheme, a weir repair job and I am about to begin another flood defence scheme in Cardiff for which I am the site manager.  

Civil Engineering is a great industry in which to work. The salaries and progression opportunities are great, and it is a highly respected profession. The highlight of my career so far has been winning Civil Engineering Contractors Association Graduate Engineer of the Year. 

My career wouldn’t be possible without my Civil Engineering degree from USW. 

To start with, I wasn’t sure which course to study at University. I spoke to my uncle who is a retired civil engineer and it sounded like an exciting career. 

The lecturers and technicians were always on hand to help you get the best results possible

The practical elements and health and safety parts of the Civil Engineering degree were the most valuable, especially in my role as a contractor. Similarly, a week’s surveying trip to the Isle of Wight taught me the essential skills I use on a daily basis. 

USW was a supportive environment in which to learn. The lecturers and technicians were always on hand to help you get the best results possible.  

In my final year, I completed a summer placement with Raymond Brown Construction, which led to a permanent position once I had graduated. 

I would recommend the course to anyone looking to gain a respected degree with many prospects and room for progression.
